Before you put up your site..
This is a sort of checklist to make sure that your page is the way you want it to be and
appealing to others.
- First, open up your main page in your browser and go through the whole thing. Make sure
all of the links work, all of the pictures are visible, and that it's easy to navigate.
- Next, visit and read these pages:
HTML Bad Style Page (This one is kind of old,
though.)
Annoying website things
insert page title here (This link
will open in a new browser window because the page is such a mess.)
- Take off anything that says "under construction." The whole point of learning HTML is so
that you can put up a complete page all at once. And everybody knows that good websites are
constantly under construction anyway.
- Don't put anything that says "best viewed with" or, "I hope you have such-and-such or
you're missing some really cool junk." Let the people who have whatever extras you use enjoy
them, and hope the people who don't can enjoy the site anyway.. you're only ticking people off
when you tell them about all of the stuff they're missing.
- Link here! Ummmm.. if you wanna..
Now it's time to pick a host. Here are some of the more popular ones, with comments on each.
Xoom
This server offers unlimited space space, and no pop-up banners. However, there is a new thing
called a "Xoombar" at the top of every page. A Xoombar is an automatic frame, so remember to put
"target="_top" in all of your external links as discussed in the frames section. Xoom also
allows no-one to link to graphics on their server, which is cool if you don't want them to.
Pages load pretty fast. Occasionally shuts down, but usually warns you first.
Geocities
Offers eighteen megabytes. You don't have to have pop-ups if you put a geoguide on all pages.
Along with the geoguide they offer a banner exchange, guestbook, and other services. Currently
undergoing another merger. Pages load about medium speed.
Tripod
Eleven megabytes as well. Pages load about medium, especially if you have a lot of graphics.
Pop-ups required and seemingly unstoppable.
Eccentrica
Fast loading. Short URL. No pop-ups. However, they only offer half a megabyte of space, so
only look at this one if you have a very small page.
Most pages will have an FTP program for you to download and explain how to use it, or there will
be an HTML editor you'll have to paste your stuff into. The only FTP program I've used is
WSFTP, but if you have questions about that one, feel free to ask.
